THE IRON AGE

It is not certain among the archaeologists and the historians when iron was introduced in Nigeria.

But it is generally believed that it had been in existence before it reached Nigeria. Hence, there is evidence that the iron smelting in Nigeria was founded in Taruga near Abuja about 500 B.C. Iron technology according to more evidence was founded at Nok in the Southern Area of Kaduna State, at Kastina – Ala, Jema, and Wamba.

However, iron technology brought about significant changes in people’s lives. Iron tools and weapons like guns, matchet, etc. were more effective than stone as far as hunting was concerned.

Thus, the iron tools or weapons made were more destructive and as such caused loss of lives and property. Man is still using iron till today.
