- Brought together the North and South administratively, promoting national unity
- It gave greater participation to Nigerians with majority of non-officials for the first time
- It promoted nationalist activities
- Divided Nigeria into three regions – North, West and East
- Encouraged the membership of Nigerians into the executive council for the first time
- The constitution laid the foundation for a full-blown federal structure in 1954
