ORGANIZATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OAU)

ORGANIZATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OAU): The organization was established on the 25th of May, 1963 when the heads of 32 independent African states signed the charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  

AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF THE OAU

  1. To promote co-operation & unity among Africans.
  2. To improve the living standard of Africans.
  3. To defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African states.
  4. To eradicate all forms of colonialism in Africa.
  5. To promote and increase international co-operation and support the basic human rights as declared by the United Nations.

MAJOR ORGANS OF OAU

  1. The Assembly of He of states and government.
  2. The council of ministers. 
  3. The General secretariat.
  4. The commission for mediation, conciliation and arbitration.
