Chemical Properties of Ammonia

1. It reacts with oxygen to release water and nitrogen.
4NH3(g) + 3O2(g)  →   6H2O(L) + 2N2(g)

2. It acts as reducing agent –
3CuO(s) + 2NH3(g)  →   Cu(g) + 3H2O(L) + N2(g)

3. It acts as precipitating agent –
Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2NH3(ag) + 2H2O(L)  →   Pb(OH)2(s) + 2NH2NO3(aq)

4. It reacts with acids to form ammonium salts.
NH3(g) + HCL(aq) →   NH4CL(aq)
