BRITISH OCCUPATION OF LOGAS

The following factors led to the British acquisition of Lagos in 1851:

  • The British desire to abolish slave trade was introduced by the Portuguese and the Brazilians.
  • The internal political instability and dynamic government in Lagos paved the way for the British intervention.
  • The British had the intention or ambition to secure stable trade with the interior and as a result, occupied the area to enable them to operate there.
