TYPES OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Human rights are basically categorized into:
1. civil rights
2. political rights
3. economic rights
4. social rights and
5. environmental rights.

CIVIL RIGHTS OF CITIZENS:

These are rights of citizens, which enable them to relate with one another in a peaceful and happy way. They are those rights that are related to liberty and citizenship duty. These rights have been adopted by the United Nations charter to help regulate people’s way of life and protect the dignity and worth of human person. These rights are:
i. Right to life;

ii. Right to dignity of human person;

iii. Right to personal liberty;

iv. Right to privacy and family life;

v. Right to fair hearing;

vi. Right to freedom of movement;

vii. Right to education;

viii. Right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion;

ix. Right to social life and social amenities; and

X. Right to freedom of expression.

POLITICAL RIGHTS OF CITIZENS:

These are the rights of Nigerian
citizens that enable them to freely participate in the politics of their country. These rights are:

i. right to vote and be voted for in an election;

ii. right to freedom from discrimination;

iii. right to peaceful assembly and association;

iv. right to criticize government constructively and objectively; and

v. right to freedom of expression and that of the press.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RIGHTS OF CITIZENS:

These are socio-economic and cultural rights. These rights guarantee the economic empowerment of citizens. These rights enable citizens to have access to a good and better standard of living, job opportunities and business ventures etc. These rights are:

i. right to work;

ii. right to living wage;

iii. right to free and compulsory education;

iv. right to food and health care services;

v. right to acquire and own property;

vi. right to engage in any lawful and meaningful business

vii. right to social security for the physically challenged and less privileged citizens;

viii. right to housing or decent shelter;

ix. right to adequate standard of living and

x. right to science and culture.

ENVIRONMENTAL RIGHTS OF CITIZENS:

These are rights that ensure a sustainable good and conducive environment for decent and highest attainable physical and mental health of citizens in a country. They are

i. right to clean and healthy environment;
ii. right to basic amenities such as clean water, health care, recreation etc;
iii. right to freedom from discrimination;
iv. right to freedom of movement and association etc.

HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES:

Human right abuses are the violation and/ or unlawful deprivation of people or individuals from enjoying their fundamental human rights as enshrined in the constitution either by citizens themselves, the government or its agencies.
