His Conquest led to the division of the empire into two – Eastern and Western. Sokoto became the capital for the Eastern Empire while Gwandu became the capital for Western empire. His brother, Abdulahi became the Emir of Gwandu and was made to control the Western Empire while he (Uthman) controlled the Eastern Empire from his capital – Sokoto. All other Emirs were later created from other Emirates under the approval of the Emir of Sokoto and Gwandu respectively.
