Soft or Prescription Drugs

These are drugs usually taken for medical purposes, especially for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease and relief of body discomfort. Prescription drugs can be classified into pain relievers, sedatives and tranquillizers.

Examples are:

i. Narcotics (also known as analgesics or pain relievers) such as paracetamol, panadol etc.

ii. Antibiotics such as Ampiclox, Oframax, Rocephine, Tetracycline, and Gentamicin.

iii. Sedatives (also known as depressants or tranquillizers). A good

Prescription drugs can be abused in the following ways:

i. Over-dose

ii. self- medication – i.e. without doctor’s advice
