Regional Geography of West Africa Location, Size and Position

Location:

The location of West Africa lies between longitude 15°E and 18°W of the greenish meridian and latitude 4° N to 20° N of the equator.

Size:

The West African subregion occupies a total area of approximately 6, 143. 000 Sq Km. It is made up of countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Cote D’lvorie, Niger, Bukinafaso, The Gambia, Mauritania, Cape Verde, Benin, Guinea, Sierra — Leone etc.

The population of West Africa is estimated to be about 136, 788, 000 going by the census figure of 1976.

Position:

West Africa is bounded in the North by the Sahara Desert, in the East by the Republic of Cameroon, Adamawa, Mandara Mountains and lake Chad and in the West and South; it is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean.
