PARTIES BY GEN. SANI ABACHA (1993 – 1998): After the ousting out of Chief Ernest Shonekan led interim government. Gen Sani Abacha inaugurated the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (NECON) led by Chief Dagogo Jack. About five political parties were registered to vie for the 1997/98 elections. They are:

  1. United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP),
  2. National Centre Party of Nigeria (NCPN).
  3. Grassroot Democratic Party (GCP).
  4. Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN).
  5. Committee for National Consensus (CNC).
