NOTE: Nigeria was the 8th member of the commonwealth of nations in 1960, but her membership was suspended in 1995 on the heels of the controversy of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni minority rights activists by the late Gen. Sani Abacha regime.

however, Nigeria was re-admitted into the association during the regime of Abdusalami Abubakar and all sanctions against Nigeria were lifted.

South Africa was one of the founding members but was kicked out in 1961 due to apartheid.
