Dr. William Baike’s Expedition

Dr. Baike in 1845 led a team of four Europeans and 54 Africans including a missionary, Samuel Crowther.

The team spent four months exploring the river Benue.

All members of the team survived the expedition because they had regular supplies of anti-malaria medicine courtesy of Dr. Hutchinson who was also part of the team.

The expedition was also very successful because Samuel Crowther set up the headquarters of the Church Missionary Society at Onitsha in the Eastern region.
