1. They have the same molecular formula
2. They have the same chemical properties
3. They differ from each successive member by CH₂
4. They show regular grading in their physical property.
5. They are produced by the same method.

NB: Functional group is atom or group of atoms, which determine chemical reactions, or properties of a homologous series.
