REASONS FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE

  1. The Industrial Revolution in Europe at the end of the 18th century encouraged the use of machines instead of human labour. As a result, there was little or no demand for slaves.

2. Britain had positive attitude towards their colonies and for that decided to eliminate man’s inhumanity to man.

3. There was a public opinion on the rights of man and the professed human liberty in Europe.

4. Notable experts like Granville Sharp, Thomas Clarkson, and William Wilberforce made a humanitarian movement in 1765 and that helped to wipe away slave trade.
