MILITARY RULE IN NIGERIA

Military rule is defined as the forceful seizure of political power by the Armed forces through coup d’ etat. 

Since Nigeria’s independence, the country has witnessed a series of military regimes ranging from:

  1. Aguiyi lronsi – Jan. 1960- July 1966.
  2. Yakubu Gowon – July 1966 – July 1975.
  3. Murtala Muhammed – July 1975 – Feb. 1976
  4. Olusegun Obasanjo – Feb. 1976 – Oct. 1979.
  5. Muhammadu Buhari – Dec. 1983 – Aug. 1985.
  6. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida -Aug.1985 – June 1993.
  7. Sani Abacha – Nov. 1993 – June 1998.
  8. Abdulsalami Abubakar – June 1998 – May 1999.
